Mount's Bay Gig Club was founded in 1986. For years the club was served well by the two gigs Lyonesse and Sally. But to compete with the top clubs in the world, lighter, faster gigs were required. The Isles of Scilly World Championships in 1998 saw the launch of Storm built by Scillonian boatbuilder Peter Martin. As a result, performances improved and the club experienced greater success than ever before, most notably with the Men's A crew finishing 12th on the Scillies and winning the pilot gig section of the London river race. However, the club, still not content felt the need for another gig and so Peter Martin was set the task of repeating the fine job he did with Storm. Taran was launched at Scillies '99 and she proved to be an even faster gig than Storm. 1999 was a very successful year with the Men's A crew consolidating their 9th position in the world championships by finishing third overall in the Seacom events, and compting well with the Dutch in the London river race. The Ladies A improved dramatically throughout the season to finish 3rd in the Newquay championships. Both men and ladies trained hard over the winter and on the water rowing commenced in March and prevailed in all conditions. The hard work paid off with superb results on the Scillies (see Scilly 2000). The club, with newcomers joining all the time, promises to go from strength to strength as the names Storm and Taran become commonplace amongst the world's most accomplished crews. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
